Types of Boarding Passes
A boarding pass is a document provided by an airline during airport check-in, giving a passenger permission to enter the restricted area of an airport (also known as the airside portion of the airport) and to board the airplane for a particular flight. At a minimum, it identifies the passenger, the flight number, and the date and scheduled time for departure. Boarding passes are always required to board a flight.
There are several ways to get a boarding pass. You can get it on the airline’s website and print it on paper. Or you can also pull it up on your phone in the airline’s app. You can also print it at the airport.
If you check in to your flight online, the airline will generate your boarding pass and share it with you via email. Most airlines will send you an email 24 hours before departure prompting you to check-in online. To confirm whether your airlines offers online check-in, you can visit their website.
Generally, boarding passes are provided in 3 types:
1. Paper boarding passes
2. Mobile boarding passes
3. Print At Home boarding passes
Paper Boarding Passes
This is the most common type of boarding pass. It is mostly thermal paper-based. They are equipped with a bar code. Paper boarding passes are issued either by airport staff at the airport check-in counter or can be printed at the airport by an Automated Ticket & Boarding Pass printer.
For airlines, they can utilize the rear page of the boarding pass for advertising, making the pass more attractive to passengers and also serving as an additional revenue for airlines.
In addition, Paper boarding pass typically provides more information than digital ones, including the e-ticket number and booking code.
Mobile Boarding Passes
On the other hand, Electronic boarding passes were issued via online check-in, with many airlines have moved to issuing electronic boarding passes, whereby the passenger checks in either online or via a mobile device. The boarding pass is then sent to the mobile device as an SMS or e-mail.
The mobile boarding pass is equipped with the same bar code as standard paper boarding pass, and it is machine readable. The gate attendant scans the bar code display on the phone before allowing for boarding the flight.
Print At Home Boarding Passes
A print-at-home boarding pass allows travellers to print at home, at the office or anywhere, permitting them to board a particular flight. It is provided/sent to travellers via email or apps after flight booking is confirmed.
This allows passengers to print in advance without having to queue up for boarding pass check-in at the airport and also helps airlines to reduce the airline’s need for airport staff and infrastructure costs associated with check-in procedures.
