FAQ About Cash Register Paper
What is the difference between cash register paper, and POS printing paper
The terms cash register paper and POS printing paper refer to the same product, ie the paper that is most commonly used for printing receipt of purchase transactions, which is categorized into 2 different paper types dependent on the type of printer used, namely thermal paper and woodfree paper. Since the papers are in roll form, they are sometimes called cash register roll.

What type of paper is used for thermal cash register paper?
As the name suggests, thermal cash register paper is a type of thermal paper. The basic thermal paper is composed of 3 layers, made up of base paper, pre-coat and thermal coat.
The foundation of the paper is the base paper, made from wood pulp. The paper is then coated with a pre-coat as a primer to fill the empty spaces between fibres for a smooth surface for printing, and acting as a stabilizer. The thermal coat is a solid-state mixture of leuco dye, stabilizer and developer. The thermal coat is the imaging / thermal reactive layer. The image is created through direct transmission of heat onto the thermal paper, which due to thermal reactions with chemicals like dye, stabilizer and developer, the paper changes colour to black when the print head of a running thermal printer applies its hot pins as the paper threads beneath it.
In addition to the 3 basic layers, thermal paper can also be given a protective coating on the front or back. A coating on the front (topcoat) is useful if the paper is to be exposed to mechanical wear, adhesives, chemical influences (eg through oil and grease, solvents containing alcohol etc) or adverse environmental effects (eg through high humidity, moisture or water), allowing the image to last for a longer period by resisting the elements. The back coat is for anti curling, antistatic electricity treatment and it also reflects heat or where the reverse side of the thermal paper requires protection.
Can you use thermal paper in a regular printer?
No, just like a lock and key analogy, a thermal paper only works on a thermal printer. Thermal paper imaging is achieved via a chemical reaction in the thermal coat when it is exposed to heat. A thermal paper only requires heat to generate the image, without messy ink or ribbon.
Why choose a thermal cash register paper?
There are many advantages a thermal cash register paper has over woodfree cash register paper, notably:
1. Clearer image print out and free of blurs and ink smudges
2. Easy to load and handle as it doesn’t require any ink cartridge or ribbon, hence less tedious paper loading requirements in comparison to dot matrix printer, which paper must be threaded under the ribbon.
3. Faster printing ensuring an increase in productivity and faster transaction time as a thermal printer is 10x faster than a dot matrix printer
4. Thermal printer is highly durable as it has fewer moving parts, therefore, less susceptive to breakdown and lower maintenance cost
5. Consistent and precise printing quality as it does not depend on the ribbon / ink, which wears out with usage.
6. Good for branding as it allows flexibility and printing variety of fonts, logos, barcodes and images that are well beyond dot matrix printer’s capabilities
7. Space-saving, as thermal printers are small and portable for handheld carry
